Feel-good sounds from the Heart of Africa
Back in Africa, Siama Matuzungidi became a legend of Soukous music, recording his intricate guitar on hundreds of songs and touring the world with popular artists like Sam Mangwana and Tshala Muana. Currently based in Minneapolis, Siama has become known for his captivating guitar style, catchy songs, spirited singing and traditional African instruments like balafon and thumb piano. He always peppers his shows with upbeat Soukous but he especially loves exploring the Congolese Rumba and traditional music of his homeland. Siama is usually found teaching in schools these days (for Classical MPR's "Class Notes" and MacPhail) so public appearances are rare.
For this special "After Dark" concert, Siama has enlisted an incredible jazz band to bring new life to his songs and whenever he performs, he conjures the magic of when he and his family would tell stories and sing together under a canopy of twinkling stars.
"When we listen to Siama's music we hear Home, Mama Africa. This is very beautiful music everyone can enjoy." - Ladysmith Black Mambazo
